The number

31 — Thirty-one offers for cornerback Zion Davis out of McArthur HS in Hollywood, Florida. Davis chose Appalachian State over 30 other programs. When a player with that many options picks Boone, North Carolina, the staff is selling something the other 30 programs could not match.

Dowell Loggains was hired in December 2024 after spending 16 years coaching in the NFL — offensive coordinator or quarterbacks coach for the Titans, Browns, Bears, Dolphins and Jets. He went 5-8 in his first season at App State. This is his first full recruiting class.

The geographic footprint reflects the Southeast roots the job requires. Florida (3), Georgia (3) and Alabama (2) account for more than half the class. South Carolina, Ohio, Arkansas, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Washington, D.C. fill the rest. Eight states and Washington, D.C. in a 14-man class. The Mountaineers are recruiting the eastern seaboard from Miami to D.C.

The defensive side carries the class. Three defensive backs — Zion Davis (CB, Hollywood, Fla., 31 offers), Brexton Bell (CB, Savannah, 17 offers) and Jamar Grissett (SAF, Irmo, S.C., 15 offers) — plus two edge rushers — Damion King (Westerville, Ohio, 20 offers) and Kemontae Chaplin (Washington, D.C., 22 offers) — account for five of the 14 commits. These are contested recruits choosing App State over significant Power 4 interest.

The offensive side features two running backs — Arwin Jackson (Carol City, Fla., 21 offers) and JoJo Accelus (Monticello, Ark., 14 offers) — and quarterback Ben Musser from Prince Avenue Christian in Bogart, Georgia. Musser had 20 offers and grades at 73.61, the class's second-highest rating. Prince Avenue Christian is one of Georgia's premier private school programs.

The Alabama connection is worth noting for Diehard readers. Jalijah Rutledge (WR, Moody) and Tre Stone (LB, Opelika) give App State two commits from the state. Moody is a Birmingham suburb.

The class profile is strong — the average Profile score (0.689) ranks 69th nationally, suggesting this class punches above its composite weight. Loggains' NFL network is pulling from contested recruiting boards in Florida, Georgia and the DMV.

College football's Dead Period began June 22 and runs through July 31. Coaches cannot have in-person contact with recruits during this window. This is a check-in on where the Mountaineers' class stands as the Dead Period begins.
