South Alabama led Tulane into the final 77 seconds and couldn't finish. Ohio trailed Jacksonville State 14-0 and wouldn't quit, winning in four overtimes with a third-string freshman quarterback. One team knows it can come back. The other needs to prove it can close. That's Saturday night at Hancock Whitney.

2. The Stakes

South Alabama is at home against a banged-up MAC opponent missing three starters and uncertain at quarterback — the kind of game Major Applewhite's program needs to win as it builds toward Sun Belt play. For Ohio, a road win in Mobile in John Hauser's first full season as head coach would be meaningful for a program picked fourth in the MAC preseason poll.

Ohio leads the all-time series 1-0 after a 27-20 win in Athens in 2024 — a game where Bishop Davenport made his first career start as a Jaguar, throwing for 226 yards and a touchdown. This is the first meeting in Mobile. South Alabama is 7-3 all-time against the MAC, with five wins in the last six meetings and a 3-0 record when hosting MAC opponents at Hancock Whitney Stadium.

4. About Ohio

Ohio is in year one under Hauser, who was named the 31st head coach on Dec. 26, 2025, after serving as interim for the Frisco Bowl — a 17-10 win over UNLV. The program went 40-14 over the past four seasons, the most successful four-year stretch in school history. The Bobcats played Nebraska tight — 28-21 in the fourth quarter — before the Huskers scored three straight touchdowns to pull away for a 49-21 final. Then they rallied from 14-0 down at home to beat Jacksonville State 29-27 in four overtimes, using three different quarterbacks after injuries to Nick Poulos and Matt Vezza. Defensively, Ohio has been a top-five MAC defense in points allowed per game each of the last three seasons and led the conference in rushing defense in 2024 at 94.3 yards per game (fifth nationally).

The Jaguars opened with a 39-14 home win over Southeastern Louisiana, controlling possession for a program-record 40:09, then lost 28-24 at Tulane after holding a fourth-quarter lead. Tulane running back Jaylin Lucas ran for 214 yards on 11 carries, including an 80-yard touchdown, and the Green Wave scored the go-ahead touchdown with 77 seconds left. Now in his third year, Applewhite (12-15 at South Alabama, 27-26 career) is working with 60 newcomers — 32 freshmen and 28 transfers — and just 44% returning production (105th nationally). The defense features coordinator Todd Orlando, reunited with Applewhite from their time together at Houston (22-4 record in 2015-16, including a 13-1 season). Davenport through two games: 40-of-59 (67.8%), 450 passing yards, 3 touchdowns, zero interceptions, 523 total yards.

Brendan Jenkins, WR, South Alabama (#12, 6-0, 194, Sr.) — Already surpassed his 2025 totals (117 yards, 1 TD in 9 games) with 14 catches for 197 yards and 2 TDs. Ranks 14th nationally in receptions per game (7.00).

Darren James-Hamilton, S, Ohio (#4, 5-11, 185, R-So.) — 98-yard kickoff return TD and game-winning tackle at the 1-yard line in 4OT against Jax State. PFF: 76.7 COV grade.

8. When Ohio Has the Ball

The quarterback question shapes everything. Hauser: "Depending on who's in there for us." Poulos and Vezza are both questionable, which means true freshman Levi Davis — who scored the winning two-point conversion against Jax State on a 3-yard rush — could see significant time.

Ohio's interior offensive line pass protection grades well: Bryce Parson (88.5 PFF PBLK), Job Mavrick (80.5). Riley Neer is the go-to target — 72.0 PFF offensive grade, 10 catches, 142 yards, 2 TDs through two games. Beyond Riley Neer, the receiving options have been limited.

South Alabama will bring pressure. Hauser: "Defensively they do a ton of stuff. They're always pressuring and doing different things. Real high blitz percentage. They're going to try to get you behind the chains and get some negative plays." The front four — Mase Lewis (73.7 PFF DEF), Stephen Johnson (73.5), Tre'Mon Henry (67.9) — has combined for 2 sacks, 8 hurries and a forced fumble through two games.

Behind that front: safety Cole Blaylock has allowed 5-of-5 completions for 101 yards with a 26.7% missed tackle rate. D.J. Moore grades 36.0 PFF DEF. Linebacker Parker Shattuck has a 30.8% missed tackle rate.

Ohio's running backs — Duncan Brune (82.3 PFF PBLK) and Victor Rosa (80.2 PFF PBLK) — grade as strong pass blockers but below average as runners (56.0 and 53.5 PFF RUN, respectively).

9. When South Alabama Has the Ball

Ohio's cornerbacks: Kendall Bannister has allowed 136 yards in coverage at 34.0 yards per reception with 82 yards after the catch — 52.9 PFF DEF on 146 snaps. Ronald Jackson Jr. has a 36.7 tackling grade and has allowed 51.0 yards per reception. Eli Thompson (45.5 PFF DEF, 50.0% missed tackle rate) may be out. Brendan Jenkins posted his first career 100-yard receiving game at Tulane (119 yards) and has a touchdown in both games.

DJ Walker sits on Thorpe and Bednarik watch lists. PFF grades him at 42.4 DEF overall, 30.7 in coverage. His run defense grade (74.1 RDEF) is solid.

The run game: PJ Martin (77.7 PFF RUN, 142 yards, 2 TDs), Keenan Phillips (110 yards) and Trae'von Dunbar (80.2 PFF OFF on limited snaps). Hauser: "Their running backs were very good players. They do not get tackled easily by one person ever." South Alabama uses motion and misdirection. Hauser: "The challenges are keeping edges to the defense and not seeing all the things that are going on back there because they do a lot of motion and shifting and try to throw you off the scent."

Ohio's front: Michael Molnar (90.8 PFF RDEF, 13 tackles vs Jax State) anchors a defensive line that rotates 8-9 players. SA center Kenton Jerido grades 50.1 PFF PBLK, the weakest mark among the starting five. Left tackle Reese Osei-Wusu (79.0 PFF OFF) and right tackle Ethan Hubbard (85.6 PFF PBLK) anchor the edges.

Davenport is a dual-threat facing a defense that has seen three straight mobile QBs. Hauser: "Our defense, we're built for mobile quarterbacks. We have to be. We see them every week." Applewhite on Davenport's growth since that 2024 start at Ohio: "So much more familiarity and comfort. He's known since January he was going to play in this game."

10. Ohio Wins If

Ohio keeps its quarterback clean behind the interior line (Parson 88.5, Mavrick 80.5 PFF PBLK) and stays out of negative plays against SA's blitz packages. The 8-9 man D-line rotation pressures Kenton Jerido (50.1 PFF PBLK) up the middle. Edge discipline holds against SA's motion — Hauser said they improved from Nebraska to Jacksonville State on that front. Ohio forces a turnover — neither team has forced one through two games.

11. South Alabama Wins If

The Jaguars control the clock (38:55 TOP/game, leading the nation), feed PJ Martin, Keenan Phillips and Trae'von Dunbar, and get Brendan Jenkins targets against Ohio's corners (Kendall Bannister 52.9 PFF DEF, 136 yds allowed; Ronald Jackson Jr. 36.7 TACK). The front four generates pressure. Applewhite on the Tulane loss: "There was three or four plays in that ball game that if we perform better we win that ball game."

12. X Factor

Ohio's quarterback situation. Poulos and Vezza are both questionable. True freshman Levi Davis — 11 career snaps, all in the fourth overtime against Jacksonville State — may be taking snaps on the road against a Todd Orlando defense. Hauser: "Having a game plan that fits who's in there."

You know, I always like watching defenses and seeing how all people pursue to the ball. This game comes down to Bishop Davenport. If he continues to play clean football and make sound decisions, the Jaguars have a big edge at quarterback.
