THE STAKES
Arkansas State lost at Louisiana 23-20 last week on a last-second field goal — the second straight game decided by a field goal for the Red Wolves. A loss Thursday puts them at 0-2 in Sun Belt play. The schedule helps after this — three of the next four are at home — but 0-2 early digs a hole.
South Alabama opened conference play with a 52-35 win over ULM and sits at 1-0. A win Thursday puts the Jaguars at 2-0 heading into three road games in their next four. A loss makes them 1-1 with trips to Marshall, Louisiana Tech and Louisiana ahead.
Arkansas State leads the all-time series 8-6. The Red Wolves are 5-2 against the Jaguars at home. South Alabama is 2-5 in Jonesboro. This is the first Thursday game in series history and the fourth non-Saturday meeting between these two programs.
THE NUMBERS
0 — Fumbles lost by South Alabama this season — zero in four fumbles, No. 1 nationally. The Jaguars have committed just 2 turnovers all year, both interceptions at Kentucky, and are also first nationally in punt return defense and blocked kicks allowed.
12 — One-score victories for Arkansas State since the start of the 2024 season, tied for the most in FBS with Arizona State. Duke has 11. Iowa State has 11. "It's a hell of a way to live a life," Butch Jones said.
134th — Arkansas State's national ranking in opponent completion percentage. The Red Wolves allow 70.7% of passes to be completed. South Alabama's quarterback ranks 14th nationally in yards per attempt and 5th in yards per completion.
12.8 — South Alabama's first-quarter scoring average, 5th nationally. The Jaguars have scored on their opening possession in four of five games and put up touchdowns in three of those four. Arkansas State's defense has allowed just 2.8 points per game in the first quarter, which ranks 31st.
ABOUT SOUTH ALABAMA
The Jaguars are averaging 35.4 points per game (34th nationally) and allowing 31.6 (122nd). Four of five games have gone Over. They're 3-0 at home, where they've averaged 44.0 points, forced 6 turnovers and committed zero. They're 0-2 on the road — by 4 at Tulane and by 24 at Kentucky.
Bishop Davenport started the first two games and went 40-of-59 for 450 yards with 3 touchdowns and zero interceptions. Jared Hollins took over and posted a career-high 321 passing yards against ULM with 6 touchdowns in three starts. Applewhite said Hollins has established himself as the starter but added, "That doesn't mean that we won't use Bishop in situations." Both quarterbacks have been productive, and Applewhite has shown a willingness to use both depending on the game script.
ABOUT ARKANSAS STATE
The Red Wolves are 2-0 at Centennial Bank Stadium (52-7 over West Georgia, 17-14 over Kennesaw State) and 0-3 on the road (24-42 at Memphis, 7-31 at TCU, 20-23 at Louisiana). They average 24.0 points per game (95th nationally) and allow 23.4 (74th). Last year's squad was the only team in the nation to start 1-4 and finish bowl eligible — just the 13th FBS team to pull that off since 2003 — and also became the 12th FBS team to win three one-point games in a single season. This program knows how to survive close games at home even when the performance is ugly.
Trey Owens threw four interceptions in the Memphis opener and has thrown zero in four games since. Arkansas State hasn't turned the ball over in three straight games and has forced 8 takeaways on the season. The Red Wolves are 13-2 in their last 15 as favorites and 3-0 after a loss. Kenny Hill — the former Texas A&M and TCU quarterback — is on this coaching staff.
KEY PLAYERS TO WATCH
Jared Hollins, QB, South Alabama — 50-of-82 for 779 yards, 6 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. His 9.50 yards per attempt ranks 14th nationally and his 15.58 yards per completion ranks 5th. Butch Jones called him "as good a quarterback as we played" and "a complete player." Applewhite said it directly: "He's taking care of the football."
Joe Drew, LB, Arkansas State — A converted safety who leads the team with 46 tackles and 9.2 per game, 19th nationally. His 27 solo stops rank 13th nationally and lead the Sun Belt. Drew has three consecutive double-digit tackle games — 12 at TCU, 11 against Kennesaw State, 10 at Louisiana — making him the first Red Wolf to do that since Melique Straker in 2022 and the sixth Arkansas State player to post three straight 10-tackle games since 1995.
PJ Martin, RB, South Alabama — 328 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns through five games. Covers projects him for 61.4 rushing yards Thursday. South Alabama has rushed for 240-plus yards in every win this season, and Martin is the lead back in that rotation.
Chauncy Cobb, WR, Arkansas State — Cobb had 1 reception across his first two seasons on campus, then caught 73 last year with a career-high 126 receiving yards at ULM and 117 at App State. He has caught a pass in 19 straight games dating to the 2024 68 Ventures Bowl. Covers projects him for 67.3 receiving yards Thursday.
INJURY REPORT / AVAILABILITY
South Alabama
- K. Marion, WR — Out
- D. White, WR — Out
- B. Barnes, WR — Out
- M. Lynch, TE — Out
Three wide receivers are out. Applewhite has been building receiver depth all season — eight different receivers caught passes against ULM. "We want to play as many guys as we can," Applewhite said. "It is no secret." He named Trae Stevenson, Micah Woods, Jeremiah Jones-Thomas, Anthony Eager and Brendan Jenkins as receivers he trusts in the rotation.
Arkansas State
- Kenyon Clay, RB — Questionable (ankle). Jones: "He's practiced all week, should be available to play. ... We anticipate him. I think today we'll know a little bit more after practice."
- D. Spencer, RB — Out (knee)
Both of Arkansas State's top running back options are limited. Clay was held out of the Louisiana game even though he practiced all week. Spencer is done. If Clay can't go, Solomon Baggett (211 rushing yards, 2 touchdowns on the season) carries the load alone in a backfield that was already running behind the passing game in total yardage.
WHEN SOUTH ALABAMA HAS THE BALL
South Alabama runs the ball 45.2 times per game (11th nationally) and gains 4.5 yards per carry. Arkansas State faces 38.2 rush attempts per game (108th) and allows 5.2 yards per carry (123rd) with 9 rushing touchdowns surrendered in five games. Jones acknowledged the mismatch — South Alabama has "as good of a core of running backs that we faced" behind an offensive line he called "big."
The passing numbers are a similar story. South Alabama posts a 155.3 QB rating (41st) and 8.7 yards per attempt (34th), with 13.7 yards per completion (25th). Arkansas State allows a 147.8 QB rating (113th), 8.2 yards per attempt (120th) and opponents are completing 70.7% of their throws against the Red Wolves' secondary. Arkansas State generates 0.6 sacks per game, which ranks 136th nationally and near the bottom of FBS, so Hollins will have time in the pocket to find his receivers downfield.
Jones spent a long stretch of his press conference warning about South Alabama's scheme. "If you have poor eye discipline, poor eye control, they're going to take advantage with all the RPOs, the play passes, pushing the ball down the field, the different type of vertical pass game that they present," he said. He called Hollins "extremely cerebral" and said "the mark of a great quarterback is the ability to defeat tight coverage and he's able to do that."
Brendan Jenkins has 20 receptions for 319 yards and 3 touchdowns — surpassing all of his 2025 totals in five games. He caught 9 passes for 119 yards and a touchdown at Tulane. Anthony Eager has just 11 receptions but 305 yards and 4 touchdowns because his catches average nearly 28 yards apiece. Even with three receivers out, South Alabama has options and Applewhite has been rotating players to keep them fresh for exactly this kind of short-week situation.
WHEN ARKANSAS STATE HAS THE BALL
Owens is 89-of-133 for 1,043 yards and 5 touchdowns on the season, and the four interceptions from Game 1 have not recurred. Arkansas State has thrown for 1,043 yards and rushed for 699 — a pass-leaning offense that leans even more if Clay sits. Chauncy Cobb's 19-game reception streak makes him the chain-mover, and Covers projects Hunter Summers for 57.9 receiving yards as the complementary target. Baggett has 211 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns, but the running back depth behind him is thin with both Clay and Spencer limited or unavailable.
Jones was frustrated after the Louisiana game about how few opportunities his offense got. "We only had the ball three possessions in the second half and only one in the third quarter," he said. He pointed to the fourth quarter specifically, where "big runs that we gave up ... runs that go for three and four yards in the first three quarters go for 13 and 14." Arkansas State needs sustained drives and third-down conversions to keep South Alabama's offense off the field, because a game that turns into a scoring race favors the Jaguars and their 35.4 points per game.
South Alabama's defense allows 410.2 yards and 7.2 yards per play, and those numbers are not flattering. But Jones described a defense that creates problems schematically. "A lot of pressure. Man coverage, quarters, different types things, very very active. Very good defensive front," he said. Applewhite scouted Arkansas State's athleticism the same way: "I think overall great team speed. Wide receiver position, tailback position. I think their D line, their linebacking core, secondary they play with, you know, great body quickness, twitch. I see a very fast football team, well coached football team. Schematically can cause you issues on both sides of the ball."
SOUTH ALABAMA WINS IF
The three-back rushing attack grinds Arkansas State's 127th-ranked rush defense early, and Hollins pushes the ball downfield against a secondary that ranks 120th in yards per attempt allowed and 113th in opponent QB rating when the Red Wolves commit to the run. South Alabama's ball security — zero fumbles, two turnovers all season — holds up on the road against a team that has forced 8 takeaways, and the Jaguars build a lead before the fourth quarter, where South Alabama's offense averages 6.2 points per game (92nd) and Arkansas State's defense allows 6.0 (74th). Both teams slow down late, which means the team ahead going into the final period has a structural advantage.
ARKANSAS STATE WINS IF
They control possession and keep South Alabama's 35.4-point-per-game offense on the sideline — Jones cannot afford another game where his offense gets three second-half possessions. The Red Wolves' 8 takeaways collide with South Alabama's 2-turnover season and ASU forces the first fumble the Jaguars have lost in 2026. The defense survives the first quarter, where South Alabama averages 12.8 points per game (5th nationally) and the Jaguars have scored on the opening drive in four of five games. The home crowd matters on a Thursday night — what Jones called "a 4-hour commercial for Arkansas State" — in a stadium where the Red Wolves are 5-2 against South Alabama all-time and where the Jaguars are 0-2 on the road this season.
X FACTOR
Kenyon Clay's ankle. Arkansas State's top running back is questionable, and Spencer is already out with a knee injury. If Clay plays, the Red Wolves have their full backfield and can balance the run-pass split to control possession and keep the clock moving — exactly what Jones needs to limit South Alabama's offensive possessions. If Clay sits, Baggett carries the load alone behind an offense that has already thrown the ball 60% more than it has run it. A pass-heavy attack against a South Alabama defense that brings pressure out of man coverage is a difficult way to play a Thursday night road game, and it would mean Arkansas State's best available option for controlling clock and shortening the game is the same player who ran for 211 yards across five games.
COACH SPEAK
Butch Jones, Arkansas State, on Jared Hollins:
"As good a quarterback as we played. He can make all the throws. He's managing their offense. He's getting them in the right checks. You can tell that he's extremely cerebral and he's their CEO quarterback."
Major Applewhite, South Alabama, on what he likes about this team:
"The thing I like the most about this team from game one to now is just that they listen. You know, they listen and they honestly try to do what you're asking."

FanDuel / numberFire: Arkansas State (59.3% win probability)
CappersPicks (James Hayes): South Alabama 34-31
AccuScore: Arkansas State (56.8% win probability)

Models favor Arkansas State at home. Human analysts lean South Alabama. Every source has the total between 57.5 and 59.5. One historical wrinkle worth noting: the Over has hit in 7 straight South Alabama games, but the Under is 5-0 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams.
DIEHARD BOTTOM LINE
South Alabama's offense has more big-play capability and has proven it can take care of the football. Those are difference makers on the road against an Arkansas State squad that has been solid against a good schedule but struggled to stop the run at times. The Jags are building something here, and we'll take another step forward with an important road win.
South Alabama 31, Arkansas State 27 — South Alabama covers and wins outright.
Season record (South Alabama picks):
- SU: 3-1
