South Alabama is 2-0 in Sun Belt play and trying to establish itself as a contender in the West division on the road. Marshall is 0-2 in conference and desperate to stop a two-game losing streak before the hole gets deeper. It's a Tuesday night game on ESPN2 in Huntington, where Marshall head coach Tony Gibson is hosting a coal miners tribute night in a stadium that gets loud after dark.

THE STAKES

A win puts South Alabama at 3-0 in conference with momentum heading into the back half. A loss drops the Jaguars to 2-1 and hands Marshall its first Sun Belt win.

Marshall lost 45-17 at James Madison and 27-21 to Coastal Carolina in its two conference games. A third straight loss digs a serious hole. Gibson: "The South Alabama game obviously is a very important game for a lot of different reasons. It's another Sun Belt opportunity for us playing at home."

South Alabama leads the all-time series 1-0 after a 28-0 shutout in 2023. This is the first trip to Huntington for the Jaguars.

THE NUMBERS

1.01% vs. 3.24% — Turnover-worthy play rate per Pro Football Focus. South Alabama's passers generate a turnover-worthy play on 1.01% of dropbacks. Marshall's generate one on 3.24% — more than three times the rate. South Alabama has 3 turnovers on the season. Marshall has 14.

55.7% vs. 43.9% — South Alabama runs the ball on 55.7% of its offensive snaps, 27th nationally. Marshall runs it on 43.9%. The Jaguars' ground game grades 84.0 per PFF. Marshall's grades 65.6. That gap shows up on every drive.

+1.33 — South Alabama's turnover margin per game, first in the Sun Belt and 6th nationally.

47.4 — Marshall's passer rating under pressure per PFF. South Alabama's is 67.7. Both are below average when pressured, but Marshall's passers have been significantly worse.

ABOUT SOUTH ALABAMA

The Jaguars are averaging 38.8 points per game (21st nationally) and 437.8 yards of total offense (40th). The three-back rotation of Keenan Phillips, PJ Martin and Trae'von Dunbar has combined for 1,146 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns — all three grade 79.0 or higher per PFF. Jared Hollins took over at quarterback after the Tulane game and ranks 4th nationally in yards per completion (15.27) and 17th in yards per attempt (9.29). Bishop Davenport started the first two games and went 40-of-59 for 450 yards, 3 touchdowns and zero interceptions.

ABOUT MARSHALL

The Thundering Herd are 3-3 and have not played a complete game yet. Marshall lost 45-0 at No. 18 Penn State in the opener, beat Middle Tennessee 28-26, won at Missouri State 30-24, survived Gardner-Webb 36-35 on a Jorge Diaz Nicolas game-winning field goal, then dropped both Sun Belt games. The Coastal Carolina loss stung — Marshall outgained the Chanticleers by almost 200 yards but turned it over six times. Carlos Del Rio-Wilson was the 2026 Sun Belt Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and set the Marshall single-season record for rushing yards by a quarterback last year (660), but Gibson has opened the QB spot to a three-man competition between Del Rio-Wilson, Zion Turner (transfer from Jacksonville State via UConn) and Khalil Wilkins (transfer from WVU).

KEY PLAYERS TO WATCH

Keenan Phillips, RB, South Alabama — 444 rushing yards at 5.55 per carry (46th nationally) and 121.17 all-purpose yards per game (20th nationally), including a 100-yard kick return against Arkansas State. Martin (6 rushing TDs, 23rd nationally) and Dunbar (80.1 PFF grade, highest on the team) complete the rotation.

Judah Price, RB, Marshall — PFF's second-highest graded offensive player (74.2 overall, 80.9 rushing grade). Ran for 124 yards with a 50-yard long in his first career start against Coastal and added a receiving touchdown. Gibson: "The way he was running, catching the ball, just plays hard. That's a kid that cares."

Braydin Ward, DI, Marshall — PFF's highest-graded Marshall defender at 82.6 overall with an 84.1 run defense grade. Anchors the interior alongside Kenyatta Hardge (73.5). The defensive front contained Coastal Carolina's quarterback in the pocket when, per Gibson, "really, nobody's been able to do that."

Damyrion Darby, CB, South Alabama — 3 interceptions (4th nationally) with a 75.9 PFF coverage grade. The Jaguars' defense gives up yards but takes the ball away — Darby is a primary reason.

INJURY REPORT / AVAILABILITY

South Alabama

  • Khatori Marion, WR — out for season
  • Brian Barnes, WR — out for season
  • Maddox Lynch, TE — out for season
  • Dylan Chiedo, LB — out for season
  • Dominic White, WR — questionable

Applewhite referenced players getting rest during the extended break: "A lot of people don't understand like in the old days it used to be go to fall camp, you did fall camp and you went into the season. Now you're talking about five weeks there to go into fall camp to go into game week seven. That's a lot of work on the body."

Marshall

  • Louikenzy Jules, DB — out for season
  • Xavier Bausley, OL — out for season

Gibson said there are "guys in boots walking around" but nothing major. "October 20th, we should be full speed ahead. And, you know, other than the guys that we have out for the season right now." Injured players returning from earlier absences have helped the last couple of weeks per Applewhite's scouting report.

WHEN SOUTH ALABAMA HAS THE BALL

South Alabama averages 220.3 rushing yards per game (2nd in Sun Belt, 22nd nationally). The offensive tackles grade well — Ethan Hubbard at 72.6 with an 81.8 run blocking grade, Reese Osei-Wusu at 74.1. Gibson acknowledged it: "Their offensive line's good." The RPO game off the run is where Hollins' 9.29 yards per attempt becomes dangerous. Brendan Jenkins leads the receivers with 355 yards and 3 touchdowns (16.90 per catch, 62nd nationally). Anthony Eager has 4 receiving touchdowns (33rd nationally).

Marshall is top 25 nationally in red zone defense per Gibson. Safety Terrente Hinton has a 92.6 PFF run defense grade — elite run support from the secondary. But the coverage behind the front is vulnerable. The secondary grades below average as a unit per PFF, and that's where Hollins and the RPO game can exploit mismatches. Javae Gilmore had 10 tackles and 2.5 TFL against Coastal, but the coverage behind his production has been the Herd's weak spot.

WHEN MARSHALL HAS THE BALL

Gibson will not name the starter until Tuesday night. Del Rio-Wilson has an 81.4 PFF rushing grade and threw for 413 yards against Gardner-Webb (27-of-39, 3 TDs), but Marshall's quarterbacks as a group have struggled under pressure. Turner started against Coastal and went 18-of-27 for 219 yards and 2 touchdowns. Wilkins grades 73.1 per PFF — the highest of the three — and ran for 45 yards on 7 carries against Coastal.

Xayvion Turner-Bradshaw is the top receiving target (7-131-2 against Gardner-Webb), and Toby Payne led the team with 8 catches at Penn State. Marshall's offense grades 67.2 per PFF — the run game and passing game have both been inconsistent, and the 14 turnovers have erased what production they've generated.

South Alabama's defense allows 429.0 yards per game (11th in Sun Belt) and 34.5 points per game (12th). The coverage unit grades below average per PFF, and the linebacker and safety spots have been the weak links. But edge rusher Mase Lewis grades 74.3 with a 77.9 pass rush grade, and the Jaguars rank 20th nationally in interceptions (6). Cole Blaylock leads with 42 tackles and 3.5 TFL. The defense bends but creates turnovers.

Applewhite was direct: "I can guarantee you Marshall won't go out and turn the ball over five times in 30 minutes of football next week when we play him on Tuesday. So, if we're waiting on that to happen, you can forget it."

SOUTH ALABAMA WINS IF

The rushing attack establishes itself against Marshall's front early and South Alabama controls possession. The Jaguars have been a strong first-quarter scoring team all season, and jumping on Marshall early in a hostile environment would take the crowd out of it. If Darby and the secondary force even one or two turnovers against a Marshall offense that has given the ball away 14 times, the Jaguars can pull away.

MARSHALL WINS IF

Whoever starts at quarterback protects the football and the defense front disrupts South Alabama's run game enough to force the Jaguars into passing situations. The home crowd at Joan C. Edwards Stadium on a Tuesday night is a factor — Applewhite called the environment "pretty electric" and said "the guys love their football." Marshall needs a clean game more than a great one.

X FACTOR

Whether Marshall plays clean football. Gibson described his team as "stuck in neutral" — talented enough to compete but too careless with the ball to win consistently. If the turnovers continue, South Alabama will not need to play its best game. If Marshall protects the ball and gets a full game from its defensive front, this becomes a difficult road trip.

COACH SPEAK

Major Applewhite, South Alabama, on Marshall's defense:

"I think they've got a really good front. Great length, great depth. They've got some injured players that have come back that have been able to help them the last couple weeks. I think they move around well in the secondary and cover. I think they can give you a lot of different looks and a lot of different pressures on early downs as well as third downs."

Tony Gibson, Marshall, on where his team is at the midpoint:

"It doesn't feel like we have reached our potential. We haven't played a full football game yet and that's why it feels so bad. It just feels like we're just stuck right now in neutral and we have to get better."

THE PREDICTIONS

Source | Pick

Covers.com (Colby Marchio) | South Alabama ML, Over 64.5

VSiN (Adam Burke) | South Alabama -3

FanDuel / numberFire | South Alabama (64.6% win probability)

DocSports (Josh Schonwald) | South Alabama -2.5

ATS.io | South Alabama -3 (projected: SA 35, Marshall 29)

DRatings | South Alabama (projected: SA 31.5, Marshall 28.6)

Bleacher Nation / DataSkrive | South Alabama ML, Over 64.5

PickDawgz (Nikos Lagouretos) | Over 64.5

Sportsgambler.com (Peter Taylor) | Marshall +2.5

The consensus is heavily in South Alabama's direction. Seven of nine sources pick the Jaguars. Covers' Colby Marchio was blunt: "I'll just flat-out say it: Marshall sucks. Its resume is putrid." VSiN's Adam Burke pointed to the rushing mismatch: "South Alabama has the better offense and the much stronger rushing attack, capable of exploiting how bad the Herd truly are."

The lone dissenter is Sportsgambler.com, which takes Marshall to cover at home based on the Herd covering +2.5 in 15 of their last 20 home games.

The Over draws support from multiple sources. Both defenses rank in the bottom 12 nationally in points allowed, combining for 68.2 points per game. The two teams are 8-1 to the Over in their last nine games combined. The total opened at 62.5 and has steamed up to 64.5.

Betting trends (Covers.com):

  • Over is 7-0 in South Alabama's last 7 games overall
  • Over is 5-0 in Marshall's last 5 games as a home underdog
  • Over is 4-0 in Marshall's last 4 games following a bye week
  • Under is 4-0 in Marshall's last 4 games following a straight up loss

DIEHARD BOTTOM LINE

A couple of things stand out here more than anything else. South Alabama protects the football and forces turnovers. Marshall doesn't protect the football and doesn't take it away. The Jaguars have 3 turnovers on the season. Marshall has 14.

South Alabama has moved the football effectively against every team on its schedule. The Jaguars were a couple of plays from pulling an upset on the road against a solid Tulane team. They were competitive for a half against a Kentucky team that has proved itself to be one of the better teams in the SEC and a contender for the College Football Playoff. The move to Hollins, coupled with the strong stable of running backs, means this offense can beat you on the ground and through the air.

Marshall is capable of defending its home field here, and you'd think the Thundering Herd will play with some urgency to avoid an 0-3 conference start. But they haven't shown they can play with the kind of consistency needed to beat a South Alabama team that knows who it is and what it must do to win.

I don't think Marshall can slow down the Jaguars enough to get a win here.

Pick: South Alabama 41, Marshall 36 — South Alabama covers

Season record: SU 188-55 (.774), ATS 125-108-5 (.525)

South Alabama picks: SU 5-0, ATS 4-1
