South Alabama is 2-0 in the Sun Belt for the first time since 2022, and it took a program-record 56 points in a conference game to get there. The Jaguars beat Arkansas State 56-49 Thursday night at Centennial Bank Stadium on a night when Keenan Phillips produced 284 all-purpose yards and four touchdowns, and the defense forced three turnovers worth 21 points.

It was the first road win of the season for South Alabama, and it was the kind of conference game that could carry weight in November. Arkansas State put up 49 points and 516 yards and made every lead feel temporary. South Alabama was outgained by 160 yards. The Jaguars won because they ran the football, took the football away and held on.

WHAT IT MEANS

South Alabama is 4-2 with a 2-0 conference start, a 50-plus scoring output in back-to-back games for the third time in program history and a rushing attack that has produced 200-plus yards in four of six games. The Jaguars have also allowed 49 points to Arkansas State. The schedule gives Applewhite one game in the next 23 days — a Tuesday night at Marshall on Oct. 20 — and the offense has proven it can carry the team. The question for the second half of the season is whether the defense can hold up its end.

THE TURNING POINT

The closing drive. South Alabama took over at its own 25 with 6:51 left and a lead that had shrunk from 56-35 to 56-49 in eight minutes. Phillips carried six times for 27 yards. Hollins converted a 4th-and-1 with a 5-yard rush. The Jaguars ran 13 plays for 38 yards, did not attempt a pass and ended the game with two kneeldowns. "We finished the game on the road," Applewhite said.

THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY

Good: Four backs combined for 280 yards and six touchdowns on 43 carries — Phillips 19-156-3, Martin 12-57-1, Hollins 7-48-2, Dunbar 5-19. South Alabama went 5-of-6 in the red zone and scored on its opening possession for the fifth time in six games. Martin opened with a 6-yard touchdown run on an eight-play, 75-yard drive that took 4:38 off the clock. Cole Blaycock: "What fires me up the most is when we run the football down somebody's throat and there ain't a thing they can do about it."

Bad: South Alabama converted 5 of 12 third downs, fumbled three times and lost one. Six penalties for 55 yards.

Ugly: Trey Owens completed 33 of 55 passes for 407 yards and picked the secondary apart for most of the night. Arkansas State ran 82 plays for 516 total yards. In the fourth quarter, a 73-yard Arkansas State punt pinned the Jaguars at their own 20. Two plays later, South Alabama fumbled. Arkansas State scored in two plays — a 15-yard Owens pass to Jabari Bush — to cut the lead from 56-35 to 56-42. Then Arkansas State drove 81 yards in 10 plays for another score. The 21-point lead was seven in eight minutes. Applewhite: "That turnover on offense was costly. Put our defense in a bad spot."

THE STATS THAT MATTER

46 rushes, 8 pass attempts — South Alabama ran the ball on 85 percent of its offensive plays. Hollins was 4-of-8 for 76 yards and a touchdown — a 7-yard pass to Rod Gibbs in the third quarter — and did not attempt a pass in the fourth quarter.

21 points off 3 turnovers — Mase Lewis forced a fumble that Stephen Johnson recovered. Lewis intercepted Owens. Damyrion Darby returned another Owens interception 58 yards — his third career pick return and second in two games. Those three plays produced 21 of South Alabama's 56 points.

4-of-5 on fourth down — Applewhite: "We're going to live and die by the book at times and really what it has to do with, it's not so much the book, it's the belief in the players that they'll go execute and make us right."

WHAT THEY SAID

Major Applewhite, South Alabama head coach:

"I'm proud of the resiliency of our guys. I know that's cliche, but hell, man, there's a lot of bad stuff happening. They could have went in the tank and they just stayed focused and they kept fighting."

"I'm pleased with being 2-0 in the league and getting a road win because we're going to have to play some tough road games down the stretch."

Keenan Phillips, South Alabama running back:

"Once I got past the kicker, I knew I was gone."

"It shows everybody that we are actually front-runners in the Sun Belt and we have a chance to do something big."

Cole Blaycock, South Alabama safety:

"We had three huge turnovers today. Put the offense in a good position to score. We just got to keep that up and continue to play better and better for them."

Mase Lewis, South Alabama linebacker:

"I trust this defense. I love this defense and all we want to do is work and get better and we will get better because this is not the standard today."

3 STARS

1. Keenan Phillips, RB/KR, South Alabama — 284 all-purpose yards, 4 TDs. 19 carries, 156 yards, 3 touchdowns, long of 42. Returned a kickoff 100 yards for a fourth touchdown — the third in program history, tying Xavier Johnson (vs. Idaho, 2015) and J.J. Keels (vs. Mississippi Valley State, 2011).

2. Mase Lewis, LB, South Alabama — Forced fumble and an interception. "This is not the standard today. But we're going to make sure we get to the standard each week."

3. Jared Hollins, QB, South Alabama — 7 carries, 48 yards, 2 rushing TDs. 4-of-8 passing, 76 yards, 1 TD. Converted the two-point attempt on Phillips' third-quarter touchdown.

FINAL TAKEAWAYS

Phillips, Martin and Dunbar entered this game with a combined 844 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns through five games. Thursday pushed the total past 1,000. The three-back rotation keeps legs fresh — Phillips carried 19 times, Martin 12, Dunbar five — and Hollins adds a rushing dimension that defenses have to account for. The identity is clear.

The correctable problems are the fumbles, the penalties and the third-down rate. The concerning problem is the secondary. Owens threw for 407 of Arkansas State's 516 yards. The rushing defense held — 27 carries, 109 yards — but the passing defense gave up chunk plays all night. Missing players — Caleb Dozier, Tirrell Johnson, Emmanuel Waller, DJ Moore, Xavious Anderson — may help when they return. The 11 forced turnovers through six games have papered over the yardage, but the coverage has to improve.

South Alabama is 3-5 all-time at Jonesboro. Road wins in this league are earned. This one counts.
