The Really Big Preview: South Alabama at Louisiana

Everything you need to know before two Sun Belt teams on losing streaks meet in Lafayette with bowl positioning on the line.

Michael Desormeaux has coached against South Alabama long enough to know how this goes. "When we won 13 games and when they won 10 games, both of those games came down to last-second field goals," he said. "When you play these guys, it's going to be a physical football game." Both teams need this one. South Alabama is 4-4 and has lost two straight. Louisiana is 5-3 — a win at home clinches bowl eligibility.

2. The stakes

The Ragin' Cajuns are 5-3, have not lost at home this season and have four games left after this — at UL Monroe, Coastal Carolina, at Georgia State and potentially the Sun Belt Championship.

South Alabama needs two wins in its final four games to reach bowl eligibility. A loss drops the Jaguars to 4-5 with Troy, at Southern Miss and App State remaining — and the two-game losing streak becomes three.

Both teams are 2-2 in Sun Belt play. Louisiana's two conference losses came on the road by a combined five points — by 1 at Louisiana Tech and by 4 at Southern Miss. South Alabama split — at Marshall and at home to Louisiana Tech.

3. The numbers

0-8 — South Alabama's record when throwing at least one interception since 2024, tied for worst in FBS.

90.8 — Brent Gordon Jr.'s Pro Football Focus (PFF) grade, the highest of any player in this game.

213.1 — South Alabama's rushing yards per game, first in the Sun Belt and 14th nationally.

53% — The rate at which South Alabama's defense allows scores on opponent drives, second-worst in FBS.

4. About South Alabama

The Jaguars opened 4-2 with wins over Southeastern Louisiana (39-14), Ohio (41-36), ULM (52-35) and Arkansas State (56-49) — the back-to-back 50-point games marked the first time South Alabama scored 50 or more in consecutive weeks since 2023. The non-conference losses came on the road at Tulane (28-24) and at Kentucky (45-21). Then the last two weeks changed everything. South Alabama managed 13 points at Marshall and lost at home to Louisiana Tech 35-20 with 12 penalties and two turnovers.

Major Applewhite afterward: "We're going to get inside the house, close the door, shut the blinds and have a family meeting." He pointed to the experience gap — Louisiana Tech's quarterback has been there, its backs have played, nine of 11 defenders returned. South Alabama doesn't have that yet. "We don't have that type of playing experience right now."

South Alabama has lost four of its last five road games.

5. About Louisiana

Louisiana won five of its first seven — Lamar (38-7), UAB (21-14), at Charlotte (34-7), Arkansas State (23-20) and Troy (33-6). The two early losses came on the road at No. 14 USC (49-30) and at Sun Belt leader Louisiana Tech (32-31). Then Southern Miss beat the Ragin' Cajuns 35-31 in Hattiesburg before the bye.

Desormeaux framed the skid as margins, not identity. "Six more points, okay, and being 7-1 right now does not change who we are as a team," he said. He acknowledged the intensity dropped: "We did not play with the same intensity and same play speed that we have for the first seven weeks." On the bye: "What you need coming out of a bye late like this, you need the week one excitement," he said, adding that the team needs "week nine execution and confidence."

Louisiana has won its last six games at Our Lady of Lourdes Stadium.

6. Key players to watch

PJ Martin, HB, South Alabama — 83.9 PFF grade, the highest-graded Jaguar. 552 yards, 7 touchdowns. A rushing touchdown in seven of eight games this season.

Brent Gordon Jr., CB, Louisiana — The best player on the field Saturday and it isn't close. 90.8 PFF grade, 90.9 in coverage. 13 pass breakups, 2 interceptions, 50.9% completion rate and 67.3 passer rating against on 53 targets.

Anthony Eager, WR, South Alabama — 22.50 yards per catch, second in the NCAA. Six touchdowns. A Mobile native from McGill-Toolen Catholic, Eager is the deep threat who can change a game in a single play.

Lester Jones, ED, Louisiana — 87.4 PFF pass rush grade in just 92 snaps. Nine pressures and two sacks in limited action. He and Tito Chikere (78.8 pass rush, 71 snaps) are rotational edge rushers who wreck possessions when they're on the field.

7. Injury report / availability

Louisiana

  • Collin Jacob, S — Questionable. Starter who went out during the Arkansas State game. 89.3 PFF run defense grade. Desormeaux: "Collin Jacob right now has a real chance for this week." He added: "Since he's been out, I think defensively we've been a little bit inconsistent there." His return directly impacts the rushing matchup.

South Alabama

  • No specific injury updates available from Applewhite's press conference. Full availability report not yet published.

Note: Check official availability reports closer to kickoff for both teams.

8. When South Alabama has the ball

This is the marquee matchup — South Alabama's three-back rotation against a Louisiana defense coming off its worst run game of the season.

South Alabama's three-back rotation of Keenan Phillips (80.4 PFF, 576 yards, 6 touchdowns), Martin (83.9, 552, 7) and Trae'von Dunbar (79.8, 295) has produced 1,423 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns — 83.5% of the team's ground production. The offensive line earned a spot on the Joe Moore Midseason Honor Roll, the only Sun Belt school and one of five Group of 6 programs on the 25-team list. Ethan Hubbard (79.4 PFF, 75.3 run blocking) anchors the left side. Desormeaux called it "the best O-line we've faced in conference so far."

Louisiana's run defense grades 68.8 on PFF. Against Southern Miss, the Ragin' Cajuns gave up 286 rushing yards on 43 carries (6.7 yards per carry). But there's a wrinkle — Louisiana has not allowed a 10-yard rush on third and long since 2024, the best mark in FBS. South Alabama's rushing success rate: 46.5%. Louisiana allows 44.6%.

In the passing game, Jared Hollins (66.7 PFF) averages 14.57 yards per completion, ninth in the NCAA, with nine touchdowns. That deep passing attack runs into Louisiana's coverage unit, which grades 92.3 — anchored by the Gordon Jr.-Avery Demery tandem. Demery (83.6 PFF, 87.0 coverage) has allowed zero touchdowns on 36 targets with a 62.8 passer rating against. The third corner spot is the vulnerability — 71.1% completion rate allowed and three touchdowns.

South Alabama allows pressure on 27.3% of dropbacks. Louisiana generates pressure at 28.6%. The Jaguars should have time to throw when they want to.

Desormeaux on the matchup: "That's kind of strength on strength. And that's what both teams are going to try to do."

9. When Louisiana has the ball

Lunch Winfield (77.8 PFF) has thrown for 1,452 yards on 66.7% completion with six touchdowns and rushed for 470 yards. Desormeaux on Winfield's efficiency: "The goal is 70%, which is really, really high." On the tradeoff between accuracy and explosiveness: "Naturally, your efficiency goes down a little bit, but you have an opportunity to change the game on some big throws down the field when you can hit them." Caden Jensen (77.9 PFF, 78.6 run blocking) anchors the run game as a blocking tight end. Trenton Chaney (76.9 PFF) and Russell Babineaux (69.4) are the receiving targets. KeDarius Wade leads the team with 279 receiving yards.

Louisiana runs 55.3% of the time. The running back committee — Steven Blanco (238 snaps, 69.0 PFF), Anthony Reagan Jr. (121, 77.3) and JJ Garner (125, 72.3) — splits the workload. Louisiana's backs have fumbled six times this season.

South Alabama's defense grades 53.9 overall on PFF — the worst team grade on either side of this game. The coverage unit grades 51.6. The run defense grades 50.2. The Jaguars allow 402.1 total yards per game (10th in the Sun Belt) and 32.8 points per game — last in the conference. Opponents complete 67.0% of their passes against the Jaguars.

Louisiana's pass protection is the concern. The Ragin' Cajuns allow pressure on 38.9% of dropbacks — the highest rate of either offense. The offensive line grades below average as a unit outside of George Jackson (71.5 PFF). One tackle spot has drawn eight penalties in 482 snaps. Damyrion Darby (73.6 PFF, 81.1 pass rush grade from the nickel, three interceptions, nine pressures, three sacks) and Mase Lewis (71.5 PFF, 73.8 pass rush, 12 pressures, three sacks) are the pass rushers who could exploit it.

Louisiana scores on 96.7% of red zone trips, fourth in the NCAA. South Alabama allows red zone scoring on 85.7% of opponent trips.

10. South Alabama wins if

The run game wears down Louisiana's front. South Alabama averages 32:48 in time of possession — 15th nationally and third in the Sun Belt — and has run 577 offensive plays to opponents' 477. The Jaguars have held the possession advantage in six of eight games. Against Louisiana Tech, South Alabama rushed 44 times for 205 yards — the volume was there even in the loss. Louisiana allows 127.0 rushing yards per game (47th nationally). Controlling the ball and the clock keeps the Jaguars' defense off the field — South Alabama has allowed 35 or more points in five of its last six games.

The Jaguars protect the football. South Alabama has committed just six turnovers — four interceptions (third-fewest in the Sun Belt) and two fumbles lost (tied for 10th nationally). The Jaguars are 4-0 when leading the turnover margin and 0-2 when trailing it. Louisiana has thrown six interceptions and lost five fumbles. Christian Ross has two fumble recoveries, fourth in the NCAA.

South Alabama starts fast. The Jaguars have scored on their opening possession in six of eight games. South Alabama's first-quarter spread has covered in nine of its last 11 games. An early lead changes the math for a Louisiana team whose identity this season has been built on taking leads and holding them.

11. Louisiana wins if

The defense holds early. Louisiana allows scores on 7% of opponent first-quarter drives, third-best in FBS. South Alabama is 4-0 when leading at halftime and 0-3 when trailing. If Louisiana takes a lead into the fourth quarter, South Alabama's late-game offensive efficiency — 8.1 yards per completion in the fourth quarter, fourth-worst in FBS — becomes a serious problem.

Winfield takes care of the ball. Louisiana's 11 turnovers have given opponents extra possessions all season. If Winfield avoids the mistakes and the backs hold the ball, he removes South Alabama's most reliable path to an upset. Desormeaux: "We've got to establish the run better than we did." Establishing the run without giving it away is the difference between a comfortable win and a fourth-quarter sweat.

The pass rush disrupts South Alabama's rhythm. Jones and Chikere provide edge pressure in limited snaps, and Micah Johnson (72.5 PFF, 5 pressures, 2 sacks) and Jake St. Andre (10 pressures) add linebacker pressure. Louisiana generates pressure from four different positions. South Alabama's offensive line has been the strength of the offense, but one bad series of pass protection against this rotation could flip a possession.

12. X factor

The Syracuse connection. Major Applewhite and Jim Salgado worked together on the Syracuse staff in 2005. Twenty-one years later, Applewhite is trying to move the ball against Salgado's defense. Applewhite knows what's coming: "They're multiple. You'll see multiple coverages. You'll see man, you'll see Cover 2, you'll see versions of three-deep, you'll see versions of two-deep, you'll see quarters. You'll see all-out pressure." That familiarity cuts both ways. Applewhite knows the system. Salgado knows how Applewhite thinks. The chess match between two coaches who know each other's tendencies could determine whether South Alabama's offense can solve Louisiana's secondary — or whether Salgado makes his former colleague's afternoon miserable.

13. Coach speak

Major Applewhite, South Alabama: "Forget that. Who cares about feelings? Nobody cares. Lafayette doesn't care about my feelings. They don't care about your feelings. They're a great ball club."

Michael Desormeaux, Louisiana: "I think the most physical team is going to win."

14. The predictions

Source | Pick | Spread pick | O/U | Detail

Docs Sports (Guy Bruhn) | — | SA +9.5 | — | Takes the Jaguars with the points

Bleacher Nation / DataSkrive | Louisiana ML | — | Over 57.5 | UL -310 ML; SA last 3 games avg 61.5 total pts

Dimers (ML model) | Louisiana (73.3%) | UL -5.5 (60.2% cover) | — | Predicted score: SA 24, UL 32

College Football Zone | Louisiana 27, SA 24 | — | — | —

BetMGM (model) | Louisiana (71.1%) | UL -7.5 (66.6% cover) | O/U 57.5 | Predicted score: UL 30, SA 21

Five of six sources pick Louisiana straight up. The one spread dissenter — Docs Sports — takes South Alabama with the points.

BetMGM gives Louisiana a 71.1% win probability and a 66.6% chance of covering -7.5. Dimers projects the widest margin at Louisiana 32, South Alabama 24. College Football Zone has the tightest at Louisiana 27, South Alabama 24.

Line movement: The spread varies by source — Docs Sports has UL -9.5, PickDawgz UL -8.5, BetMGM and Bleacher Nation UL -7.5, Dimers UL -5.5. Louisiana is favored by a touchdown-plus across the board.

Over/Under trends: Louisiana's home games have gone Under in all four instances this season. The average total in UL home games is 50.8 — 7.7 points below this line. South Alabama's road games have gone Over three of four. The average total in SA road games is 57.3. The Over/Under is a coin flip between two strong opposing trends.

Situational: Louisiana has won the first half in six of its last seven games as a favorite against teams from Alabama. Louisiana is 2-1 ATS as a 7.5-point or greater favorite. South Alabama has failed to cover in five of its last six November games as a road underdog against non-ranked teams.

15. Diehard bottom line

This is a crucial game for both teams for bowl positioning. It's a winnable game for the Jaguars, but they'll need to play with a lot more consistency than they have in the two-game losing streak. The outcome probably comes down to turnovers here. In Mobile, the Jaguars would take it, but home field will matter for the Ragin' Cajuns. They'll hang on to deal a serious blow to South Alabama's bowl hopes while locking up eligibility for themselves.
